In February, Philly was named one of the Best Cities for Public Transportation by Smart Asset. Living without a vehicle in a city that provides access to quality public transportation can make your morning commute much easier, but knowing the ins and outs of how the system works can save you some time and cash as well.

The average auto commuter spends 42 hours each year stuck in traffic, according to the Texas A&M Transportation Institute. If you live in the Philadelphia region, you may be laughing to yourself at that number.  Seems a little light, right?  So, if you have a better option for getting where you want to go, why wouldn’t you take it?

SEPTA

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is an excellent transit system offered to those wanting to get from place to place. The transportation network consists of buses, subway and trolley commuter services that will take you to landmarks like Penn’s Landing, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Zoo and everything in between.

TIP: Avoid paying for Regional Rail and subway tokens in the same day. A little secret that not many know about is that SEPTA offers a One Day Independence Pass for $12.  Enjoy unlimited SEPTA rides for the entire day…you’re welcome.
TIP: Need to know where your train is in real time? There’s a website for that. Skookul Philadelphia will tell you whether or not your train, bus, or any other transportation vehicle is running late, early or right on time.

PATCO

The Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO) is the second public transportation option for those looking to travel from Philly to portions of South Jersey. There are 13 station stops along this train line and it costs anywhere from $2.80 to $6 for a round trip.

TIP: PATCO has multiple schedules throughout the week, so NextPAT.co was created to let riders know when the next three trains are arriving at all of the PATCO stations.
TIP: Save money at attraction by showing your PATCO ticket. Get a $2 discount at the Camden Adventure Aquarium by presenting your ticket or Freedom Card. Get $3 off Camden Riversharks baseball games.

Want to take advantage of all Philly has to offer without a car? You’ll have plenty of options for transportation. Philly is filled with beautiful parks and internationally recognized attractions to check out along your route.
