St. Charles Borromeo Seminary
Since Palmer Theological Seminary relocated to St. Davids, St. Charles Borromeo Seminary is the sole remaining institution of higher education in Wynnewood and one of the community's most prominent landmarks.

Wynnewood's history stretches back more than a century, but it neither grew up around a railroad village like Ardmore or Bala-Cynwyd nor had the planned model-suburb heritage of Merion. Instead, it simply drew the interest of some very wealthy and well-known people who were attracted by its tranquility and greenery. Some of the neighborhood's best-known institutions and amenities also feature lots of green space.

We'll start with the institutions and amenities first. Wynnewood is home to one of the Main Line's three principal teaching

Penn Wynne Elementary new wingPenn Wynne Elementary School, the grade school serving Wynnewood's west side, is a two-time Blue Ribbon School of Excellence winner. Built in 1930, the school got a total rebuild and a new wing in 2002,

Like all of the communities on the Main Line's eastern end, Wynnewood is located in one of the best school districts in the Philadelphia region.

The Lower Merion School District consistently ranks among the best in both Pennsylvania and the nation, as all of its schools have a track record of high achievement. That includes the three elementary schools that serve Wynnewood. Depending on where in the community they live, Wynnewood children attend Merion Elementary School, Penn Valley Elementary School or Penn Wynne Elementary School. Penn Wynne, home

b.good Wynnewood"Real food made by real people" is what's on the menu at b.good, a new fast casual restaurant in Wynnewood Square that uses fresh, locally grown and sourced ingredients in everything they make.

Wynnewood may be a mostly residential community, but its small shopping districts are packed with great dining options.

On the menu at the Wynnewood Shopping Center, for instance, is a diverse mix of distinctive, quality chain restaurants and popular local eateries. Two Philly faves, Tiffin Indian Cuisine and Sabrina's Cafe, and homegrown Poppi's Pizza mix it up with the likes of Mad Mex, Elevation Burger, and Delancey Street Bagels.

In nearby Wynnewood Square, on Lancaster Avenue, you'll find b.good, a new fast casual restaurant that uses fresh,

Wynnewood shopping, then and now:  When the Wynnewood Shopping Center expanded to its current size in 1955, John Wanamaker (above left) and Bonwit Teller (above right) catered to the area's carriage trade. Today, the center (below, as it appeared in 2012) aims at a broader market with anchor tenants that cater to value-conscious shoppers: what was Bonwit's is now DSW, and Wanamakers is now a Bed Bath & Beyond.
Wynnewood Shopping Center 2012

Many outside Wynnewood associate the community with the auto dealers that line Lancaster Avenue where it passes through it. But that's not all the shopping one can do in the community.

Wynnewood's main shopping hub is the Wynnewood Shopping Center, located directly across Wynnewood Road from the SEPTA Regional Rail station. Built in the

Wynnewood StationLIke many of the community's homes, Wynnewood's Regional Rail station is a handsome stone structure; this one dates to 1870 and helped spark the community's growth.

You might call Wynnewood one of the Main Line's hidden gems, defined as much by what it isn't as by what it is.

It has lovely, large homes and a raft of well-known residents, but it doesn't have the cachet of Gladwyne.

It has shopping and dining options, but not as many as on Ardmore's bustling main street, and Wynnewood's shopping districts date to the Auto Age in contrast to the small-town downtowns of Narberth and Bala-Cynwyd.

You might even call it a model suburb. But that term applies more to neighboring Merion Station. (It does have two active civic associations, however,

Merion Friends MeetingThe Merion Friends Meeting, built in 1695, is a National Historic Landmark and the second-oldest Friends meeting house in the country.

While Merion Station may be an early-20th-century model suburb, it has a history that stretches back further than that.

All the way back to the Welsh Quakers who settled the general area not long after William Penn first set foot in what became Pennsylvania in 1682.

Some of those Quakers built a meeting house in what is now Merion Station in 1695. Located on one of the main roads that connected Philadelphia with the Welsh Quaker farms in the hinterlands, the Merion Friends Meeting (615 Montgomery Avenue, at Meeting House Lane) is a National Historic Landmark and the second-oldest Friends meeting house in the
